Bertschmann was born in Basel, Switzerland and is living and working in New York City as a painter and graphic designer. He trained at the Kuntsgewerbeschule in Basel. His teachers were Armin Hoffmann, Walter
Bodmer, Emil Ruder, Ernst Buchner, Theo Eble, Donald Brun and others. He apprenticed at Fritz Buhler's Atelier working closely with Walther Bosshart.

Bertschmann has been active as a graphic designer since 1951 and has worked as an independent designer since 1975 creating package design/ package design systems and corporate identity systems. Some of his major projects for the US and Swiss corporations include Binaca Dental Cream, Pantene, Bufferin, Newport Cigarettes, Kent Cigarettes, Proctor & Gamble's Aleve, Nestle's Alpine White, Chesebrough-Pond's Pond's.
